My work is focussed mainly around society’s traditional gender roles. I have been challenging this subject using a variety of different models and exploring what discrimination transgender, genderqueer and other non-conforming gender people may face. I have created a family who may not fit into this socially constructed role and my aim is to normalize this to some people who may think otherwise.

I have created a living room that hopefully everyone can relate to and feel comfortable in. With the use of the furniture and ornaments etc, I have purposely tried to create a more traditional old persons living area as if your in you’re grandparents house. I’ve done this so it is relatable and also so I could fill the living room with many different family members photographs like a traditions granny’s house would have. The photographs that I have added in are a family I have created. Each member challenges gender binary in some way or another. This should hopefully make people (who are not already) more comfortable with the idea of someone not adhering to traditional gender roles.

Gender Reassignment

Gender Reassignment

I have been looking at gender equality. The idea of gender binaries can trap and ostracize people who may not fit perfectly within their borders. I have been creating portraits of people as their opposite gender and also took this further by having four of us go out for a night out dressed as men. I did this in the hope for us all to see a new perspective through different eyes. I created a short film on how the night went and how the girls involved felt after doing it too. Through researching feminist art for my dissertation, i feel my work is became heavily influenced by feminism. By doing this, I feel my work can strongly show that feminists are not man haters like they are stereotyped to be but show the thin line between people’s gender and how insignificant it really is.
